Welcome to Let's Travel Australia!Australia, the land downunder. Our massive continent covers more than 7,680,000 sq kilometres (2,900,000 sq miles) and has a population of over 20 million. It is incredibly easy to travel in Oz, regardless of your budget. Backpacker and YHA hostels, motels, hotels, bed and breakfasts and pubs provide a wide variety of accommodation for every traveller. Budget and luxury tours link each city and main tourist destinations, making it simple to travel here by bus, 4 wheel drive, train, rental car or boat. The Australian climate is easily misjudged by travellers, not surprising as many TV programmes (such as the infamous Neighbours soapie) do often portray a country with seemingly all year round sunshine. Summer (December to February) can be very hot anywhere, even down south in the island of Tasmania. It is the 'wet season' in central and northern Australia during the summer months and is very lush. Winter (June to August) is the dry season in the north of the country and in the southern states it can get quite wet and cold, often with snow on the mountains or 'high country' as they are known. Australia's original inhabitants, known as Australian Aborigines, have the longest continuous cultural history in the world, with origins dating back to the last Ice Age. The first people travelled across the sea from Indonesia about 70,000 years ago. Europeans arrived in the 16th century, Portuguese and Dutch explorers cruised by followed by Captain James Cook in 1770 who claimed the continent for the British. A naturalist on Cook's voyage, Joseph Banks, suggested that Britain could solve overcrowding problems in its prisons by transporting convicts to the country and in 1787 the 'First Fleet' sailed for Botany Bay in New South Wales. Over 700 male and female convicts arrived in this harsh and strange land, along with free settlers who were attracted to begin new lives. Famous for our laid back lifestyle, tropical and cool temperate rainforests, glorious beaches, The Great Barrier Reef, The Outback with the world famous 'Uluru' (Ayers Rock) plus characters such as Crocodile Dundee ( Paul Hogan ) and Dame Edna Everage ( Barry Humphries ), Australia is a wonderful destination for all travellers. The main purpose of this website is to provide one place you can refer to for listings of quality budget accommodation and genuine small group tours. Bus tours, boat cruises, 4 wheel drive adventures, diving the Great Barrier Reef, tandem parachute jumps, surfing safaris, bungy jumping and even climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge, they are listed here.
